Story of the 9 soldiers who came late for work

“The commanding officer was furious when nine GIs who had been out on passes failed to show up for morning roll call. Not until 7 p.m. did the first man straggle in. “I’m sorry, sir,” the soldier explained, “but I had a date and lost track of time, and I missed the bus back. Being determined to get in on time, I hired a cab. Halfway here, the cab broke down. I went to a farmhouse and persuaded the farmer to sell me a horse. I was riding to camp when the animal fell over dead. I walked the last ten miles, and just got here.” Though skeptical, the Colonel let the young man off with a reprimand. However, after him, seven other stragglers in a row came in with the same story-had a date, missed the bus, hired a cab, bought a horse, etc. By the time the ninth man reported in, the colonel had grown weary of it. “Okay,” he growled, “now what happened to you?” “Sir, I had this date and missed the bus back, so I hired a cab .” “Wait!” the colonel screeched at him. “don’t tell me the cab broke down.” “No, sir,” replied the soldier. “The cab didn’t break down. It was just that there were so many dead horses in the road, we had trouble getting through.” (http://www.sermoncentral.com/sermons/excuses-instead-of-service-john-hamby-sermon-on-ot-characters-38562.asp)

– No matter how your excuses sound good or sound great, It doesn’t matter to the Lord, He doesn’t take it, He doesn’t accept it. God hates excuses. Ayaw ng Panginoon ang palusot

Exodus 3
1 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

– he was taking care of someone else’s sheep

When the Lord appeared to Moses, He said
7 The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.
8 So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey–the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.

The Lord instructed Moses to lead His people
10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”

– Moses was made a Leader. We are leaders.
– Every believer is a leader.
– We must lead

Jeremiah 1
4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying, 5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

– Moses had a lot of excuses bec he felt he was a ZERO but the Lord says I CAN TRANSFORM A ZERO INTO A HERO
– we may be a zero right now we may have nothing – but God is attracted to emptiness, nothingness. If we say we are nothing, God is attracted to us.
– When God found Moses, he was a zero

– Moses had a lot of excuses
– 11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
– Moses only had his staff – which symbolized his work, his support, his protection – which led him to greatness, to his promotion

What Moses learned through his staff:

1. Stewardship – Moses was tending someone else’s flock
1 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

– In Egypt Moses owned a lot of things, clothes, jewelry, stallions, owned and commanded people. He was powerful. He killed the Egyptian
– In the wilderness, he was taking care of somebody else’s flock. He had no ownership. Zero.

– Matthew 20:26-28
Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
• if you want to be great you must be the slave. If you want to be a great leader, think of how you can better serve your people, how you can make life easier for people
• the gift that God gave you is for you to be able to serve others. Ex. Take a look at your smile. You cannot see your smile – because your smile is not for you but for other people to see.

2. Servanthood
• Great people – Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi
• Greatness is measured not by what you get, but by what you give.
• Greatness is not measured by how many medals you wear, but by how many scars you sustained in the battlefield
• Greatness is not how many people you are, or how many people are serving you, but by how many people you serve.
• We are not getters. We are givers
• Mark 9:33-35
They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”
• Jesus never rebuked his disciples for desiring to be great
• Hindi kasalanang mangarap na maging dakila
• Hindi kasalanan mapromote at umangat ang buhay
• Hindi kasalanan ang maging leader
• It’s ok to be great. But if you want to be great, the secret to greatness is to be the very last, the servant of all.

3. Shepherding
– In Egypt, Moses had a title, and with this title he could command his people. He can manipulate people to obey because of his title.
– Madaling mag utos, mas mahirap mag alaga ng tao
– Shepherding is the springboard to greatness

Luke 22:26
But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.

– if you want to be the greatest, be the youngest, be the servant of all.

Exodus 4
2 Then the LORD said to him, “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied. 3 The LORD said, “Throw it on the ground.” Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it. 4 Then the LORD said to him, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand.

– It is no longer the staff of Moses, but the staff of God. When you give something to the Lord it becomes His. And when it becomes His, it becomes extra-ordinary. When you dedicate something to the Lord, it becomes extraordinary

– give your ordinary life to the Lord and it will be extra-ordinary

– it is so good to offer your life to the Lord.
