Story of the 9 soldiers who came late for work

“The commanding officer was furious when nine GIs who had been out on passes failed to show up for morning roll call. Not until 7 p.m. did the first man straggle in. “I’m sorry, sir,” the soldier explained, “but I had a date and lost track of time, and I missed the bus back. Being determined to get in on time, I hired a cab. Halfway here, the cab broke down. I went to a farmhouse and persuaded the farmer to sell me a horse. I was riding to camp when the animal fell over dead. I walked the last ten miles, and just got here.” Though skeptical, the Colonel let the young man off with a reprimand. However, after him, seven other stragglers in a row came in with the same story-had a date, missed the bus, hired a cab, bought a horse, etc. By the time the ninth man reported in, the colonel had grown weary of it. “Okay,” he growled, “now what happened to you?” “Sir, I had this date and missed the bus back, so I hired a cab .” “Wait!” the colonel screeched at him. “don’t tell me the cab broke down.” “No, sir,” replied the soldier. “The cab didn’t break down. It was just that there were so many dead horses in the road, we had trouble getting through.” (http://www.sermoncentral.com/sermons/excuses-instead-of-service-john-hamby-sermon-on-ot-characters-38562.asp)

– No matter how your excuses sound good or sound great, It doesn’t matter to the Lord, He doesn’t take it, He doesn’t accept it. God hates excuses. Ayaw ng Panginoon ang palusot

Exodus 3
1 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

– he was taking care of someone else’s sheep

When the Lord appeared to Moses, He said
7 The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.
8 So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey–the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.

The Lord instructed Moses to lead His people
10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”

– Moses was made a Leader. We are leaders.
– Every believer is a leader.
– We must lead

Jeremiah 1
4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying, 5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

– Moses had a lot of excuses bec he felt he was a ZERO but the Lord says I CAN TRANSFORM A ZERO INTO A HERO
– we may be a zero right now we may have nothing – but God is attracted to emptiness, nothingness. If we say we are nothing, God is attracted to us.
– When God found Moses, he was a zero

– Moses had a lot of excuses
– 11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
– Moses only had his staff – which symbolized his work, his support, his protection – which led him to greatness, to his promotion

What Moses learned through his staff:

1. Stewardship – Moses was tending someone else’s flock
1 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

– In Egypt Moses owned a lot of things, clothes, jewelry, stallions, owned and commanded people. He was powerful. He killed the Egyptian
– In the wilderness, he was taking care of somebody else’s flock. He had no ownership. Zero.

– Matthew 20:26-28
Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
• if you want to be great you must be the slave. If you want to be a great leader, think of how you can better serve your people, how you can make life easier for people
• the gift that God gave you is for you to be able to serve others. Ex. Take a look at your smile. You cannot see your smile – because your smile is not for you but for other people to see.

2. Servanthood
• Great people – Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi
• Greatness is measured not by what you get, but by what you give.
• Greatness is not measured by how many medals you wear, but by how many scars you sustained in the battlefield
• Greatness is not how many people you are, or how many people are serving you, but by how many people you serve.
• We are not getters. We are givers
• Mark 9:33-35
They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”
• Jesus never rebuked his disciples for desiring to be great
• Hindi kasalanang mangarap na maging dakila
• Hindi kasalanan mapromote at umangat ang buhay
• Hindi kasalanan ang maging leader
• It’s ok to be great. But if you want to be great, the secret to greatness is to be the very last, the servant of all.

3. Shepherding
– In Egypt, Moses had a title, and with this title he could command his people. He can manipulate people to obey because of his title.
– Madaling mag utos, mas mahirap mag alaga ng tao
– Shepherding is the springboard to greatness

Luke 22:26
But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.

– if you want to be the greatest, be the youngest, be the servant of all.

Exodus 4
2 Then the LORD said to him, “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied. 3 The LORD said, “Throw it on the ground.” Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it. 4 Then the LORD said to him, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand.

– It is no longer the staff of Moses, but the staff of God. When you give something to the Lord it becomes His. And when it becomes His, it becomes extra-ordinary. When you dedicate something to the Lord, it becomes extraordinary

– give your ordinary life to the Lord and it will be extra-ordinary

– it is so good to offer your life to the Lord.

Life After Death

Luke 16:22-24
22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’

• Death is sure. One out of one dies. We should be prepared for death. Science and medicine cannot prevent death. It can only delay death

Epitaph
“Consider young man as you walk by, as you are now, so once was I. As I am now, you soon shall be, so prepare, young man, to follow me.”

Reply: “To follow you is not my intent, until I know which way you went”

Only2 destinations when you die: HEAVEN OR HELL

Truths about Hell

1. Hell is real.

22 X mentioned in Bible

• 12x GEHENNA – The Valley of Henon (Henna) meaning sorrow or despair
• 10X HADES – Not Seen – hindi nakikita

Lumaki

Matthew 25:41
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

2. Hell is Terrible – description- apoy, uod na hindi namamatay
Bakit terrible?
• There is Physical Suffering in hell –

➢ Sense of hearing – nagkakarinigan sila

• There is Relational Suffering in hell
Madilim, pero may apoy sa impyerno.
Loneliness, kalungkutan, no friends in Hell

• There is Emotional Suffering in hell
Matthew 25:30

30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Hell is a place of eternal sadness and regret – lungkot at pagsisisi -pag nasa impyerno ka intact ang memory mo.

• There is Spiritual Suffering in hell
2 Thessalonians 1:9
9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power

There is nothing in hell because the presence of God is not in hell.

3. Hell is eternal. –
May 2 tinuturo na walang katotohanan:
• Annihilationism – madidissolve ka. Mawawala ng parang bula. Hindi pwede mangyari dahil tayo ay immortal – created in the image of God
• Reincarnation – no such thing.
Luke 16:26 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

God hates those who practice spiritism
Deuteronomy 18:10-12 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you.

4. Hell is avoidable – maiiwasan ang impyerno
Luke 16
27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ 30 ” ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”

Mayroon tayong choice

Faith or awareness?

Message
Genesis 3
The serpent tempted Eve, offered her knowledge and power, and she gave in, and even shared the disobedience with Adam. The were cast away from paradise, and the serpent was cursed.

Luke 4:1-13

The devil tempted Jesus. In His time of hunger, the devil challenged Him to turn stone to bread. The devil led Him to a high place and offered Jesus authority and splendor, then brought Him to the highest point of the temple and challenged Jesus to throw Himself down to be saved by the angels.

Application

Faith or Awareness?
The difference bet faith and awareness. Awareness is the mere knowledge that God exists. But it is far different from accepting and surrendering oneself to the God who created us, the God who is above all powerful than every living creature on earth.

Luke 4 tells us about the devil’s knowledge and awareness. The devil knew that Jesus had the power. But, being the devil himself, he believed that his power was greater than the Lord’s power, and challenged the Lord to a power showdown.

The devil was aware of God’s existence, and he even knew what was written.
Luke 4:10, 11 NIV tells us how the devil expressed his knowledge about the majesty of the Lord : “For it is written: “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ ”

And in Genesis 3:4, 5 NIV when the serpent tempted the woman: “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Where do i stand? There are times in my life when i tend to think that my knowledge and awareness is enough to give me the power to survive in this life. Just like Eve, I tend to desire more knowledge to give me more power and authority.

Who am i? Am i not a mere creation of my Creator? and without Him, I am nothing! I can never be greater or do anything above my God. No amount of knowledge or awareness can surpass the greatness of my God!

Father forgive me for those times times i have given in to my weaknesses. Let me always be reminded of my place in this world, and to rely on You alone for You Lord God are my God, my King, my Creator. Without You, i don’t even exist. Let me bear this in my heart and live each day of this brand new year wholly in reliance to Your grace, mercy and guidance.

We were all born with sin, but because God loves us, He predestined us to be redeemed from our sins by His only Son Jesus Christ. By the grace of God, we have been saved. We were created to do good things in this world. But it is not by our good deeds that we have been saved, we should not boast of our good deeds. No one is saved by the good deeds, but by the Blood of Jesus. God gave us His only Son to die on the cross for us to save us from eternal death. PRAISE THE LORD!
